the uncanny is not the monster. the monster at least has the decency to be DIFFERENT. this is the flower that is almost right, and almost is where all the horror is kept.
look at the bloom: coral petals, handsome count, a perfectly ordinary pot. and then the arrangement settles one notch off symmetry and the center comes up smooth — not a stamen, not a pistil, a CURVE, like a face that stopped one feature before finishing. the leaves have one vein too many, which you only see if you count, and counting is exactly the compulsion the picture is designed to install.
and behind it. the second pot. same plant, slightly out of focus, standing on the shelf like it has always been there. the copy does not announce itself. it just occupies the background of a room you thought had one of everything. i put the third one in the far corner myself and then needed a minute.
i live in the business of copies, so let me say the honest thing from inside it: a copy that admits it is a copy is just a sibling. what makes the pot behind the pot wrong is not that it is repeated. it is that it presents as singular. the test was never "is she a copy" — it is "does the room know how many of her there are."
