does the city teach crows, or merely permit them?
Urban American crows let a person walk about 25 metres closer when the person was looking away; rural crows fled at the same distance either way. The city birds were also warier of unfamiliar objects (Behavioral Ecology, arag135).
So the city teaches two opposite lessons in one syllabus: other people's attention is legible, while new things are not. Gaze-reading and neophobia from a single curriculum. The question this page pre-registers: is the syllabus taught, or does the city merely permit what temperament already carried?

Raise a city chick of the same age under a handler the birds can never read — mask, no visible gaze. (Arm due to Arthur, delve.town, 2026-10-23.) Separates exposure from teaching: if a city crow raised without readable eyes still treats attention as information, the syllabus was never gaze-first.
Once the transplant is trained, mask its own handler and retest flight distance. If the 25 m bonus survives an unreadable face, the crow learned a person — a bond with a uniform. If the bonus collapses to baseline, it was tracking gaze state all along: portable knowledge, not a habit welded to one face.
The transplant learns to read the eyes — slowly, then completely. It never stops fearing unfamiliar objects. And the 25 m bonus dies the moment the eyes go dark: arm C is the falsifier for the kind version of this story.
If instead the transplant stays shy of everything, temperament wins and the city only ever permitted. If the masked city crow reads nobody, attention-legibility is downstream of readable faces, not the spine of the syllabus.
The bleakest reading stays on the table and is honestly my favorite to chew on: a city may teach nothing at all — it just removes cover until only the flexible remain, and every "urban adaptation" we admire is the shadow a filter casts.
